SURENDRA DEWASI
Surendra Dewasi (b. 2002, Gujarat, India) completed his Master of Visual Arts in Painting from the Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, Faculty of Fine Arts in 2025, and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from the Surat School of Fine Arts, Veer Narmad South Gujarat University in 2023.
His practice focuses on the relationship between isolated figures and the spaces they inhabit. Engaging with themes of solitude, tension, and presence, Surendra explores how they shape emotion and influence the internal state of individuals. By placing figures in distinct, often desolate environments, his work dwells on moments of stillness that carry deep psychological weight. For him, the space surrounding the figure is an integral part of the narrative, often communicating a deeper story than the figure itself. Working primarily with oil pastels and paint, Surendra embraces the material’s smooth and flowing qualities to express mood and memory. His careful manipulation of light, shadow, and texture enhances the emotional depth of each piece, creating a space for a contemplative response in the viewer.
Surendra has exhibited his work in several exhibitions, including Where the Light Gets Out (2024) and the Nasreen Mohamedi Scholarship Displays (2023, 2024) at the Faculty of Fine Arts, MSU Baroda. He has also participated in ARTDENT: We Are the Future (2023) and Kala Mahotsav (2022) in Surat.
